Bag sealer is the most simple packing equipment in which an electric heated bar is used to seal plastic bags. This equipment is commonly used in super markets, butcher & poultry shops, fish shops, bakeries, central kitchens, etc. Bag sealers have several sizes & types; Fig.18.1.1 shows different sizes of bag sealers.

Fig.18.1.2 shows bag sealer with plastic sleeve roll.
Fig.18.1.3 shows an automatic bag sealer with foot pedal, in which no manual pressure is required, when pedal is pressed (switch on), a magnetic lock will hold the jaws together to give required pressure for an adjustable period.

Fig.18.1.4 shows an automatic bag sealer with belt conveyor for continuous production, suitable for large super markets, central kitchen of hospitals, schools, and similar establishments. Fig.18.1.5 shows portable sealing jaws for remote sealing of plastic bags while Fig.18.1.6 shows portable sealing plier which is similar to stapler but with heat effect instead of metal staples (it is very dangerous to use metal staples in food packing, local codes in some countries – e.g. France – prevent using of staples in food packing).

Fig.18.1.7 shows a bag sealer for heat sealable paper bags and aluminized gloss paper bags meat, delicatessen foods, fish, cheese, etc.

Selection factors:

·        Materials; stainless steel is preferred.
·        Required bag type; plastic, paper, aluminum.
·        Maximum bag thickness in µm.
·        Sealing bar length in mm.
·        Sealing width in mm.
·        With or without adjustable sealing width.
·        With or without cutter.
·        Heating up time.
·        Automatic controls; adjustable thermostat, adjustable timer, adjustable conveyor speed, signal lamps, counter, etc. (most of these controls are not available for manual types, and some of them are optional for automatic types).
·        Production rate bags/hour.
·        Belt size (for conveyor belt type).
·        With or without magnetic lock (instead of manual press).
·        Accessories; table, bag roll, etc.

Fig.18.1.2 shows Manual bag sealer with the following features; 400 mm sealing length, 2 mm sealing width, 2 x 150 µm maximum thickness, provided with cutter and magnetic lock, 7.3 kg weight, 0.75 KW at 230 Volts, can be optionally provided with receiving table and plastic sleeve roll, machine model (SM 400 CV).
